Mixed Chorus (S/A/T/B), Handbells (3-octave), and Pipe Organ | ca. 3 minutes
Another choral work with Debney's score from The Passion of the Christ (2004) as its foundation that works well as the Easter complement to my Good Friday-centered "Seven Meditations on the Passion". The Ressurection theme that plays as the credits roll to the film becomes the powerful opening musical statement here, set to text from the Easter hymn "Christ Jesus Lay in Death's Strong Bonds". From there, handbells join the choir as it quietly sings the tune from that hymn in addition to more of its text. The Passion of the Christ's final harmonies also serve as the closing notes of this piece.
Mixed Chorus (S/A/T/B), Clarinet in B♭, and Pipe Organ | ca. 13 minutes
I. The Crucifiers | II. The Repentant | III. The Love Ones | IV. The Darkness | V. The Want | VI. The Fulfillment | VII. The Last Breath
John Debney's score for The Passion of the Christ (2004) is an incredibly emotive work that plays a huge role in the visceral retelling of Christ's suffering and death on the cross. For years, I've contemplated recreating it, and Trinity's 2025 Good Friday Tenebrae service proved the right impetus to finally make an arrangement. For each of Jesus' seven last words, I selected a track of similar affect from the score to reduce to organ. Choir sings text excerpts from "Jesus in Your Dying Woes", and I include clarinet to cover the important woodwind solos that often bookend each piece.
Mixed Chorus (S/A/T/B) and Piano or Pipe Organ | ca. 12 minutes
I. The Savior Comes | II. A Son Is Given | III. Exulation
Each movement seamlessly weaves three chorales and three organ preludes by J. S. Bach, all from the Advent and Christmas season. Written for the 2024 Christmas Eve carol service at Trinity Lutheran Church in Norman, Oklahoma.
Mixed Chorus (S/A/T/B) and Piano or Pipe Organ | ca. 3 minutes
A shortened and simplified arrangement of the chorus from J. S. Bach's church cantata of the same name (BWV 62) paired with an English translation of the text (verse 1 from the hymn as it appears in the Lutheran Service Book). This is the second of three arrangements of this chorus commemorating its 300th anniversary in 2024. This one was written as the need arose for a more approachable arrangement for the amateur choir and its lowly organist (me) to perform. The intricate choral writing of Bach's chorus becomes the bulk of the keyboard arrangement here, leaving the tune and simple harmony for the choir to cover. The original instrumental flourishes are included where possible.
Mixed Chorus (S/A/T/B) and Piano or Pipe Organ | ca. 5 minutes
A reduction of the chorus from J. S. Bach's church cantata of the same name (BWV 62) paired with an English translation of the text. This is the first of three arrangements of this chorus commemorating its 300th anniversary in 2024. Unlike the others, this one is as faithful as possible to the original music, only omitting figurations where the keyboardist is simply unable to play everything from the original instrumentaiton.

Men's Chorus (T/T/B/B) | ca. 4 minutes
This piece transforms the hero's theme from "The Kingdom Suite" into a solemn proclamation of the source of all wisdom. Solomon's original words in Proverbs 9 are as much a warning against foolishness as they are a recognition of God's sovereignty, mirrored in the music through the juxtaposition of a dominating minor modality with passages and cadences of brighter character. The work is anchored by the harmonic progression of the borrowed theme, of which each chord correlates to the important words of Proverbs 9:10. In all, the piece is intended to provoke a profound sense of insight in accordance with the text's message while at the same time instilling the seriousness of rejecting God.
